Emoji have become a fixture of everyday life with the rise of smartphones and digital keyboards. Billions of these little images are exchanged every day, conveying everything from laughter to sheepishness to confusion. But what about the world of healthcare? Most clinicians use some form of secure communication nowadays, and some have wondered if the medical community can better utilize these symbols that have become a common and almost universally understood language.
Ruth Reader of Fast Company wrote about this and much more in a recent article exploring the intersection of healthcare and digital communication. Her piece cites proprietary research done by PerfectServe, which analyzed data from its communication platform to shine some light on emoji use in clinical settings. This data is part of a forthcoming report entitled, “The Rise of Emoji in Healthcare Communication.”
